CHARACTER INFORMATIONCharacter Name: Gregory
Age: 9-12
Canon: Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach
Canon Point: Post True Ending
Character Information: Wiki time!Personality: Not one with a happy disposition, Gregory is quick to being annoyed and angered. While his situation in the Pizzaplex adds stress that makes this trait more pronounced, he often grumbles to himself throughout the whole game and isn’t afraid to share his irritation.
A lot of his grumbling is related to anything that immediately affects his safety, like with him telling Freddy to “shut up” while he was in Freddy’s chest cavity. Truly, the rudest way he could as a child short of dropping the f-bomb. Most of the time, this is a front, hiding how scared he truly is underneath. Though he does have moments when he’s just plain annoyed and it isn’t immediately about his safety, like when he got a “crappy Mr. Hippo magnet”.
Gregory also tries to use whatever he can find to his advantage. He’s not one to waste what little resources he has, instead making as much use of them as possible. Likely this is due to him having needed to learn how in order to survive on his own. While locked in the Lost and Found, he barely has two or three minutes to escape after Vanny taunts him from the same monitor Vanessa is broadcasting her message from. Gregory scrambles around the room until he finds a screwdriver that allows him to open a vent and slip out with his life.
As a child, Gregory is surprisingly pragmatic for someone his age. He’s a lot more concerned with the facts of a situation, like how he thinks it's only fair to demolish the other animatronics for their parts and possibly stop them from chasing him. Even saying they’re getting what they “deserve”. Of course, his idea doesn't completely work out for him. Fully upgrading Freddy left the other three animatronics a lot angrier and more dangerous than before, despite being just barely functional. As pragmatic as he is, Gregory therefore has a tendency to take the most direct and immediate solutions to his problems. It’s not always going to be the best one in the long term, shown by how his half-truths to Freddy came back to bite him.
Due to his implied backstory of being homeless, danger is certainly something Gregory keeps an eye out for. It's not made clear why Gregory explicitly doesn't trust Vanessa- the only security guard on duty in the pizzaplex, to the point of avoiding her like the plague. The only clear evidence we have besides Vanessa's aggressively grumpy demeanor is how she locks Gregory in the Lost and Found room when she first catches him (leaving him a sitting duck for Vanny before his timely escape) and her voice (if it’s really her) attempting to lure him into a trap during the last few minutes before 6am. Not that it worked, because he’s not that dumb.
So while it's ambiguous if Vanessa and Vanny are the same person or separate people, neither of these scenarios make Gregory less cautious about identified threats to his health and safety.
Thanks in no small part to having been on his own for most of his life, Gregory isn’t immediately inclined toward thinking about others, focusing on his own survival. Even less so toward anyone or anything he deems as a threat. But he can be very empathetic, just selective with it. He brought up his concern about the child disappearances when given the choice to stay or leave. He chooses to stay, wanting to stop whatever is going on within the pizzaplex. Nothing would’ve changed if he left, after all. And he saw himself in those poor kids.
Even with his capacity to care for others besides himself, Gregory does have a darker, ruthless side to him. A part of him that can and will do whatever it takes without remorse if it means he’ll survive, which includes wrecking the other animatronics for their parts. Throughout the game, Gregory can find various staff messages, including a few mentioning erratic behavior from the animatronics and how they've been damaged before. Gregory doesn't hesitate in exploiting this information and carefully lying to Freddy about it.
In a different scenario, this can go as far as commanding the S.T.A.F.F. bots to dismantle Vanny if backed into a corner. Because exactly like a cornered animal, he’ll strike if he’s not given a way out. And while he instantly regrets the gruesome sight of a human being mercilessly torn apart, his life comes first, and threats to it will not be tolerated.
With all kinds of animatronics chasing him all night and various roadblocks sprouting like weeds over the course of the night, Gregory still moves on. Even with all of his doubts, he’s determined enough to reach whatever goal he has set. In a lot of ways, he’s done this by relying on Freddy’s guidance and help. But in others, Gregory can’t truly let his guard down or allow himself to become comfortable and complacent.
Such as when Freddy finally collapses and gets dragged by Moon to Parts and Services, Gregory continues alone to search for the level four security pass. This part of his long night has him meddle with bypassing animatronic endoskeletons that creep toward him whenever he breaks eye contact with them. As terrifying as all of this is and as scared as he is, he does all he can to survive the night.
